Changing Weather in Gilgit: A Wake-Up Call from the Mountains

 Introduction

For generations, the people of Gilgit Baltistan have known their seasons well. Summers were warm but pleasant, winters were long and snowy and nature followed a familiar rhythm.

But in recent years, many people in my village have started saying the same thing:

"Gilgit was never this hot before."

This summer, the heat has been far more intense than many of us remember. Days that were once comfortable have become scorching, making us wonder how quickly our climate is changing.

A Different Kind of Summer

Growing up in Gilgit, summer always meant fresh mountain air, cool evenings and pleasant days.

Today, that feeling is changing.

The temperature rises much higher than before and the heat lasts longer. Even the nights often feel warmer than they used to.

For many local people, this change is impossible to ignore.

The Mountains Are Changing Too

The mountains around us are not only beautiful, they are also sensitive to changes in climate.

Scientists have reported that many glaciers in the region are changing as temperatures rise. Changes in snowfall, rainfall and glacier melt can affect rivers, farming and the lives of people who depend on mountain water.

Living at a high altitude means we experience these environmental changes more directly than many other places.

A Global Problem, Local Consequences

One of the saddest realities is that mountain communities like ours contribute relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions, yet we are among those most affected by climate change.

We cannot stop global warming on our own, but we can raise awareness, protect our local environment and encourage responsible choices.

Climate change is not just a topic in books or on the news.

For us, it is becoming part of everyday life.

Our Responsibility

Although climate change is a global challenge, every person can make a difference.

Planting trees, reducing pollution, protecting forests, keeping rivers clean and using natural resources wisely are small actions that can have a positive impact.

Protecting the environment is not only the responsibility of governments. It begins with each of us.

A Message of Hope

The mountains have taught us resilience.

Just as nature has cared for us for generations, we must now care for nature.

If we work together to protect our environment and support efforts to reduce climate change, future generations may still experience the cool summers, healthy glaciers and beautiful landscapes that make Gilgit Baltistan so special.

Conclusion

The changing weather in Gilgit is more than just an unusually hot summer. It is a reminder that our climate is changing and mountain communities are feeling its effects.

I hope that by talking about these changes, we become more aware of the importance of protecting our environment.

The mountains have always protected us.

Now, it is our turn to protect them.
