Education in Gilgit-Baltistan: A Story of Progress and Hope

Today, Gilgit-Baltistan is widely recognised for its strong educational culture and high literacy compared to many other regions of Pakistan. This progress did not happen by chance. It came through years of dedication, community effort, and the remarkable contribution of the Aga Khan Development Network.

For decades, (AKDN) institutions have played a major role in transforming education in the mountainous areas of northern Pakistan, bringing learning opportunities to thousands of students and changing the future of entire communities. 

The Importance of Education in Gilgit-Baltistan

In the past, many remote villages in Gilgit-Baltistan had limited access to schools and educational facilities. Difficult geography, long distances, and lack of infrastructure made education challenging for many families.

Despite these obstacles, the people of the region always valued learning and knowledge.

Over time, education became one of the strongest priorities for communities across Gilgit-Baltistan. Today, students from even small villages dream of becoming teachers, doctors, engineers, researchers, and leaders.

Education has become a source of hope and progress for the region.

The Contribution of AKDN

The role of the Aga Khan Development Network in this transformation has been extraordinary.

Through institutions such as the Aga Khan Education Service (AKES) and the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), thousands of students in northern Pakistan gained access to quality education. AKDN established schools in remote mountain areas where educational opportunities were once very limited. 

Today, AKES operates more than 150 schools in Pakistan, with over 140 located in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, serving tens of thousands of students. The network has also focused strongly on girls’ education, helping increase female participation in schools across the region. 

Beyond building schools, AKDN also invested in:

• Teacher training

• Community involvement

• School improvement programmes

• Educational quality

• Leadership development

These efforts helped create a culture where education became deeply valued by society.

Empowering Girls Through Education

One of the most important achievements of AKDN has been its support for girls’ education.

In many mountain communities, access to education for girls was once very limited. AKDN institutions worked closely with local communities to encourage families to educate their daughters.

As a result, many women from Gilgit-Baltistan today are teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and professionals contributing positively to society.

This transformation has not only improved literacy but also strengthened communities and families across the region.
